I have to agree that numerically this would seem so, but having travelled to Belfast regularly over last 10 years we have noticed that since CC's have been re instated there has been an improvement in entries each year. Many people on the main land seem to think that by travelling to Belfast it is an easy option for a ticket. Not so!! Those who do travel to Northern Ireland know the cost of doing so, often travel and accomodation can come to as much as 500 pounds and then many are deterred by the troubles. However, those who do cross the Irish Sea are usually the hardened exhibitors with good stock. Many may be surprised to know that there were 4 champions alone in Open dog. No this was not a disappointing entry for Belfast, it was the usual strong entry that is attained in N.Ireland. For anyone thinking of going a warm welcome is always given and please remember this is the most important show in N Irelands calendar as is our Crufts. 15/10/02 LEEDS CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 2002 ** Pointer Successes ** A New Show Champion Show Champion Medogold Midnight Romeo JW (Subject to KC) A New Junior Warrant Winner Jilony Jack Be Quick JW (Subject to KC) 3rd in the Champion Stakes Show Champion Highshann Impressive Pro Dog Stakes Winner Tycarreg Seren Fai BLACKPOOL CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW ** Best Veteran in Show **
Show Champion Ratchdas Robin OBITUARY FRANK CLEWS (LEBRY) Pointerdom is sad to record the passing of one of Pointers stalwarts. Frank was last seen in the ring at Peterborough in 2001, judging in atrocious weather conditions where the Dog CC went to Querdon Macalorum of Gorriache and the Bitch CC to Sh Ch Pipeaway Pearlie Mae. It is hard to believe that he is no longer with us. ONE WOMAN AND HER DOG POINTER / BORDER COLLIE !! News from Pauline Smith who was approached following her holiday by the owner of her local boarding kennels. A friend has just lost her show Border Collie whilst nursing day old pups, she had noticed that Spice ( Robippa Chianti ) had a false pregnancy and asked if they could try her with the pups. Pauline takes up the story ....... " Just an update, Spice is doing really well with her new brood of Border Collie babies, she is making lots of milk and seeing to them as if they are her own (which I suppose in her mind they are as they were only one day old when their mother died) she won't get out of the whelping box unless you make her go for a tiddle, when she had Jack's litter she was the same with them, she is an absolute gem of a mother. I have joked that I hope they don't start herding grouse instead of sheep!!" Well done Pauline a very kind hearted thing to have done. A NEW WARRANT WINNER HOOKWOOD TRUE BLUE JW Congratualtions to Sue & Mark Welch on their success with HOOKWOOD TRUE BLUE JW gaining her Junior Warrant. Des McGarry was prented with a 25 year old Malt Whisky by President Bernard Child to commemorate his 50 years in the breed he looked tickled pink. OBITUARY Alicia Coupe Timadon How sad we were to learn of the sudden passing away of Alicia Coupe in April 2002. I remember how welcome she made us in her home when we went to use Sh Ch Timadon Dipper on our bitch Medogold Delilah, Timadon settles in the side of a hill and it was snowing sideways at us as we stood in the garden with Alicia looking out of the kitchen door. How welcome was the cup of tea and sandwich later on, surrounded by min poodles and irish setters. Alicia & Geoff have produced many champions at home and abroad. Our sincere condolences to Geoff. FROM: MALCOLM LESLIE (Stonebridgelees) MR ROY HARRISON: "THE END OF AN ERA" With Great Sadness I learned of the death of Roy on 5th January 2002. I had known both Roy and Mavis from the mid sixties, Mavis died in February 1986, by this time they were in the process of establishing one of the top Pointer kennels "Fiveacres". Previous to this they English Setters and Cocker Spaniels also Welsh Springer Spaniels at a later date. Roy was more interested in the show Pointers of this time and used stud dogs of the "Pennine" type, breeding his bitches to dogs from the late W Parkinson's kennel "Davium". Winning almost 50 CC's between them. Roy was also a Championship Show Judge both in this country and abroad, judging gundog groups from 1987 and culminating with Gundogs at Crufts in 1997. Roy was a committee member of the Pointer Club from 1966 -1988, Hon Secretary from 1971- 1972 also an honorary life member. Although not in the best of health latterly he always attended "The Pointer Club" shows and Setter & Pointer Championship Show if possible. I know everyone who knew Roy would wish to extend sympathy to his family at this sad time. MALCOLM LESLIE MIDLAND COUNTIES What a shame Midland counties was marred by the alledged poisoning of a top GSP. As an animal lover I find it difficult to comprehend that another exhibitor would attack an innocent dog and for what! Maybe a chance to gain a place they might otherwise have missed or for taking a dislike to an owner. Having been on the the other side of the coin I can understand the agony the owner is going through. A few years ago one of our Irish Setters was poisoned, and was showing signs of of being unwell on leaving a club show. She was in the vets for 8 days and almost died, we were lucky but well into the second thousand in vets bills. Of course we do not know what happened, Was it poison? Was it at home? Was it at the show? Who would do such a thing? Had we upset someone? Why take it out on the dog? Questions that remain unanswered to this day. I have been told that there have been alledged incidents on the Pointer benches. Is this true or is it paranoia? If it is true then I am dismayed that we should harbour these feelings within our lovely breed. THAME SHOW The Pointer Club Supported Classes at Thame on 20th September attracted an entry of 38 dogs making 49 entries for Judge Beryl Wright(Dervorsteh). Beryl found her BOB in Hookwood True Blue owned by Sue Welch from the Junior Class and Best Puppy was Medogold Scottie owned by Alison Davis.
